Often people blame junk or processed foods for their health problems caused by obesity. More than a third of U.S. adults are overweight. It’s a medical term that means you weigh at least 20% more than what is ideal for someone your height, often because of body fat. It’s measured by BMI (body mass index): 30 and higher is considered obese.
Overweight and obesity may increase the risk of many health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. However, you need to keep in mind that not every obese person would have all these health issues. Also, the risk of developing health issues increases, if someone in your family suffers from it.

But if you are considered to be overweight, losing as little as 5 percent of your body weight may lower your risk for several diseases, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. If you weigh 200 pounds, this means losing 10 pounds. Slow and steady weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week, and not more than 3 pounds per week, is the safest way to lose weight.
